OUR COMMUNITY

LEARN MORE

Oak Grove Montessori School is an intentionally small school that serves children ages 2.9 through 6th grade. Our school building houses three spacious multi-age classrooms, a child-accessible kitchen, and many meeting and learning spaces for small groups of all types. Our students thrive in a tight-knit community that is designed to foster collaboration, spark curiosity, and ignite a lifelong love of learning.

The Natural Environment

Oak Grove is situated on a beautiful, sprawling, natural campus in Mansfield, CT that features outdoor classroom spaces, a greenhouse, a vegetable garden, a vernal pond, walking trails, play and climbing structures, Yolk Grove (our chicken coop), and the Seth Brody Memorial Orchard, a very special space for mindfulness, contemplation, and peaceful moments. We are very mindful of our carbon footprint, and all members of our community make it a practice to compost, recycle, and reuse throughout the school day.

Caring Adults

Our community of teachers, administrators, and support staff is dedicated to nurturing the development and learning of Oak Grove children. The Montessori teacher’s role is that of a facilitator and guide, sparking the children’s interest and imagination, while encouraging responsibility and independence through the setting of reasonable limits. Alongside the teachers, other adult members of our community also encourage the children’s development of self-esteem and self-discipline, while modeling respect and kindness to others and our natural environment. Please learn more about the caring adults in our community by visiting our staff directory.

Supportive Peers

Our small school community cultivates a culture of care where all children are seen, valued, and respected. In our multi-age classrooms, children have the opportunity to spend three years with the same teacher, who develops a deep understanding of each student’s talents, needs, personality, and learning style. As they grow within a particular classroom, children take on various roles as leaders and followers, teachers and students, role-models and supporters. School-wide, there are ample opportunities for all children to socialize and work together in developmentally appropriate settings. In this environment, Montessori children act as models for appropriate choices and behaviors that honor the feelings of self and others, fostering mutual respect while building leadership skills.
